The celebration will take place in the historic Civil Rights District. The activities are designed for the entertainment and education of entire families as well as other members of the community. The events take place in the Civil Rights Institute and on three stages, the Mainstage, the Pavilion in Kelly Ingram Park and The historic Sixteenth Street Baptist Church. Kelly Ingram Park was used as a gathering place for protesters who fought for freedom and justice during the 1960's Civil Rights Movement. The park gained worldwide recognition when the media captured footage of the local police turning water hoses and police dogs on the protestors who consisted of a number of the African American youth.

In 1963, the Sixteenth Street Baptist Church was bombed. Among many that were injured, four little girls lost their lives in this tragic incident. The Civil Rights Institute is proud to have the church host one of its Juneteenth activities, the Spiritual and Gospel Fest which will feature local choirs and vocalists as well as national recording acts.
