* JUNETEENTH: A CELEBRATION OF FREEDOM! is an ethnic extravaganza held Saturday, June 17, 2000, from 2p-6p at Riverfront Park (1111 N.Boulevard) in Tampa, FL. Scheduled activities include an art exhibit entitled 'Know Your Past and Make A Difference in the Future!', gospel concerts, 'Say It Loud' poetry readings, 'The Roots' Hair and Fashion Show showcasing the original hairstyles and clothing of Africa, 'Nothin' But Net' men's and women's basketball tournament, and much, much more. This is the first annual event and a crowd of around 500 people is expected. This is a family event and there will also be children's activities like kickball, swimming, volleyball, etc. This event is sponsored by Save the Village- a non profit organization whose mission is to develop and to implement educational and rehabilitative programs and events for the cultural improvement of the inner city. Pompano Beach*
Broward County Libraries, Northwest Branch will hold a Juneteenth Celebration on June 17, 2000. We will have a number of events including a watermelon seed spittin' contest, an ice cream churn turn, a story tree, crafts and relay races for the children, hop scotch and double dutch, a 1865 fashion show and contest. There wil be an old time blues and spiritual singer, professional reenactments, an escape artist and the children of the community will present a play. Also there will be face painting, tug of war, a health center, and plenty of food like, hot sausages, grilled chicken, peanuts roasted and boiled,corn on the cob in the husk and red soda water. Library cards will be issued at that time and voters registration will take place.Seniors in the community 75 years old and up who have been a positive role model for the children in the community and are still living will be recognized on that day.This is our first time having this community sponsored affair but I am sure it will not be the last.
