By proclamation of the Huntsville city mayor, Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity, Incorporated will host its 12th Annual Juneteenth Festival “A Celebration of Life, Truth and Freedom”
on Saturday, June 17th, 2006 on the Campus of Alabama A&M University. The event is free to the public and will take place between the hours of 11:00 a.m. and 5:00 p.m. There will be a variety of activities and entertainment for children and adults. Some of the various activities include a talent show featuring local elementary and high school cheerleading squads, dance teams, dramatic multicultural presentations performed in song and dance, games for kids and performances by Burwell’s Taekwondo Academy and many others. Local vendors will provide food, drinks as well as a variety of other products and services. Other community service organizations will be in attendance to register voters, screen for Sickle Cell and check blood pressure.
Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity, a certified 501C-3 non-profit organization, was founded at Howard University in Washington, D.C., January 9, 1914, by three young African-American male students. The founders of the organization wanted to organize a Greek letter fraternity that would truly exemplify the ideals of brotherhood, scholarship, and service. Today, ninety years later, Phi Beta Sigma has blossomed into an international organization of leaders striving to uphold our Fraternity Motto "Culture for Service and Service for Humanity". It is in keeping with the spirit of the Fraternity Motto that Phi Beta Sigma organizes and supports numerous activities and projects in the Huntsville community.
