June
16, 2007 - Sidney Cooper Family - My uncle,
Sidney Cooper, is considered the Father of Juneteenth in
the beautiful city of San Diego, California. He
arrived in Diego from Red Bird, Oklahona,in 1950.
He began quietly celebrating Juneteenth in the nid-1959s
when my family lived in a house across the street from
the park where black people congregated on Sunday
afternoon. A few years after he and my aunt opened
a barbershop, beautyshop, and small market in the not so
beautiful ghetto of San Diego, he began feeding the
homeless on Juneteenth. By the 1970s his
Juneteenth celebration had become an institution for the
many people he helped. Duringf the crack epidemic,
the numbers of people he fed swelled. In the
nineties he moved his Juneteenth celebration to the
Saturday closest to June 19th.
My uncke passed in 2002, but his family continues the tradition he
so well-popularized in San Diego. For the last
four years the city has been closing Imperial Avenue
(the main thouroughfare thru the traditional black
community for our celebration of slavery's end.
This year we will have a stage adjacent to my uncle's
property. The program will include
speakers, dancers, two bands, etc. We always have a
jumper and play area for children, artwork, and other
booths. We also continue my Uncle Sidney's
tradition of feeding everyone who comes to celebrate
with us.

BERKELEY |
JUNE 18, 2006
- BERKELEY JUNETEENTH ASSOCIATION, INC. The celebration of Juneteenth in Berkeley, CA has a life of its own, which continues to evolve and grow. The success of nineteen previous celebrations was the result of community networking. City officials, corporations, community groups, businesses, churches, media representatives, educators, artists, and others all contributed their time and money. The result, was the bringing together of a wide cross-section of the Bay Area community in the celebration of a major African American Cultural event. With nineteen successful festivals, and previous year’s attendance over 10,000, Juneteenth in Berkeley has become a bay area tradition.
Berkeley Juneteenth Festival has established a reputation as the west coast’s longest running Juneteenth celebration in the state of California. With our foundation firmly in place, and to cement our existence, BJAI’s goal is an expanded cultural scope: interacting, educating and networking with all segments of our culturally diverse community.
To maximize this event as more than a day-long festival, several components are being introduced, and several expanded so that the historical, educational, and cultural significance remain at the forefront.
