its tradition of fostering culture and diversity within
the community, the UWF Black Employees Association will
celebrate "Juneteenth" today, June 13, from 11:30 a.m.
to 1 p.m. at the UWF Main Campus on the green between
Buildings 12 and 18. Highlights of the celebration will
include music, entertainment and free food. Admission is
free and open to the public. The oldest known
celebration of the ending of slavery, Juneteenth
festivities first originated in 1865 in Galveston,
Texas, when Union soldiers led by Maj. General Gordon
Granger landed and announced that the Civil War had
ended and all slaves were free. Although there is some
discrepancy about why the announcement came two and a
half years after President Lincoln's Emancipation
Proclamation, June 19, 1865, continues to mark a day of
freedom and jubilation for people of all races,
nationalities and religions. |

Juneteenth is the oldest known Celebration of the Abolition of Slavery. (Dating back to 1863). It was on June 19th that Union troops, led by Major General Gordon Granger, landed at Galveston. Texas. With news that the war had ended and that all slaves were now free. This was two and-a-half years after President Lincoln's Emancipation Proclamation, which had become official January 1. 1 863. The Emancipation Proclamation had little impact on the Texans due to the minimal number of Union troops present to enforce the new executive order. However, with the surrender of Genera tee in April of 1865, and the arrival of General Granger's regiment, the forces finally were strong enough to influence and overcome the resistance. Originally celebrated primarily in Texas and Louisiana, Juneteenth is now celebrated in black communities all over the U.S. with picnics, block parties, parades and family reunions.

Miami / Overtown - June 12-19, 2006 - Jubilate, Inc.
Jubilate's second annual Juneteenth Festival,
presented by Miami Performing Arts Center, returns to the Overtown Folklife
Village from June 12 – 19, 2006. The eight-day celebration will feature the
internationally recognized music duo Black Violin, the debut of the Overtown
Urban Classic Orchestra, and an exciting performance of Sometimes We Feel, a
suite for trumpet and piano created and performed by trumpet virtuoso
Longineu Parsons and featuring pianist Dr. Joanna Sobowska.
Fred "Bam Bam" Scott, Jubilate's music director and Grammy Award-winning
producer, has collaborated with Florida natives Black Violin (
blackviolin.net <http://blackviolin.net/> ) to bring together two genres
that seem to be wildly different - hip-hop and classical music - with the
advent of the Overtown Urban Classic Orchestra.
Featuring students from Jubilate's Overtown Project and their caregivers,
the Overtown Urban Classic Orchestra, an idea originated by Jubilate alumnus
and Miami-Dade schoolteacher Arthur Scavella will serve as an
intergenerational meeting of South Florida's musical cultures - hip-hop,
gospel, jazz, reggae, Latin, R&B and classical.
"Our intent is to celebrate not only our music, but also the major
contributions of Overtown to the global cultural landscape," said Scott.
The classically trained violinists Wil-b and Kev Marcus, of Black Violin,
have been friends since attending Parkway Middle School and started out in
the industry as producers by co-founding the production crew DKNEX with
three other producers. Two and one-half years ago, they added their own
music to the mix.
After winning the Apollo Theater Showtime in Harlem three times in the past three months, accompanying Alicia Keys at the Billboard Awards, performing on the same bill as Lloyd Banks, Fat Joe and NAS, and embarking on their first world tour with Linkin Park, Black Violin is starting to garner recognition for its fresh sounds.
"We are dedicated to aiding young people and providing opportunities for them to achieve their goals, and are extremely happy to be able to
collaborate on this project," said Kev Marcus, Black Violin co-founder and Jubilate alumnus.
Longineu Parsons is a master trumpeter, composer, multi-instrumentalist and vocalist. He has performed and recorded with such greats as Cab Calloway, Nat Adderley, Cecil Taylor, and Nancy Wilson. He has also performed as a guest soloist with the Jacksonville Symphony, the Palm Beach Pops, Tallahassee Symphony, Augusta Symphony, Gainesville Symphony and, most notably, the Conservatoire Nationale de France.
Dr. Joanna Sobowska studied piano performance at the Chopin Academy in Warsaw under Professors Lidia Kozubek, Teresa Manasterska, and Maja Nosowska. As a soloist and chamber musician, Dr. Sobkowska has performed at the concert series of the Warsaw Philharmonic in Poland, the Festival Internacional del Piano in Bucaramanga, Colombia; the Piccolo Spoleto Festival in Charleston, South Carolina; and CASMI International Summer Program in Prague, Czech Republic.
Longineu and Joanna present music from the traditional trumpet and piano repertoire. They also perform Negro spirituals, Spanish and Italian songs, as well as electronic music and original compositions with multicultural influences.
This year's schedule is as follows:
June 12 – 17, 2006 (9:30 AM – 3:00 PM); Overtown Urban Classic Orchestra's Juneteenth Workshop kicks off the Juneteenth programming under the direction of Fred "Bam Bam" Scott at the Booker T. Washington Senior High School Music
Department, located at 1200 NW 6 Avenue in Miami. This is a free
intergenerational workshop open to anyone that can capture the sounds of Overtown - from hambone and cellists to DJs and drummers, from Gospel choirs and classical singers to ballet and tap dancers, steppers, rappers and more - ages 10 – 110.
Saturday, June 17 (7:00 PM); Black Violin's concert Come Sunday When Jesus Walks will debut the Overtown Urban Classic Orchestra and Chorus, featuring the Jubilate Jazz Ensemble and Dr. Julie Silvera in the auditorium at Booker T. Washington Senior High School.
Monday, June 19 Juneteenth (7:00 PM), Sometimes We Feel, a concert for trumpet and piano featuring Longineu Parsons and Joanna Sobkowska will close this year's Juneteenth activities at the historic St. Agnes Episcopal Church, 1750 NW 3 Avenue, Miami.
All events are free and open to the public.
The 2006 Jubilate Juneteenth Celebration is presented by Miami Performing Arts center and sponsored by the John S. and James L. Knight Foundation, Miami Performing Arts Center, Miami-Dade Cultural Affairs, Keith and Renata Ward Family Foundation, Booker T. Washington Senior High School, Black Violin and Jubilate.

Miami Performing Arts Center presents, Jubilate's 2005 Juneteenth Festival
“Ngoma Ya Kiasili” (music of the ancestors)
featuring,
Kenya’s Mamlaka Music Club, The Jubilate Vocal Ensemble, Overtown Juneteenth Parade and A Rally for Quality Education
Miami, Florida May xx, 2005 – “Ngoma Ya Kiasili” (music of the ancestors) is the theme for Jubilate’s 2005 Juneteenth Festival presented by Miami Performing Arts Center (MPAC) in the historic Overtown Folklife Village, June 17- 20.
In partnership with the Lyric Theater, Overtown N.E.T. Office and Booker T. Washington Senior High School, this year’s activities will include a series of free concerts and events featuring the internationally acclaimed Afro Cuban pianist, Felix Spengler; Overtown’s Juneteenth Parade and family fun festival; a rally for quality education with Bob Moses, founder of the Algebra Project; the Jubilate Vocal Ensemble with Kenya’s Mamlaka Music Club and concluding with a musical commemoration to the Freedom Riders featuring an incredible array of world class singers and musicians.
Friday, June 17:
This year's festival begins with “Freedom's Journey” celebrating the 25th Anniversary of the Mariel Boat Lift. It will include works by William Grant Still, Ernesto Lecuona, Rachmaninoff, Afro Cuban Folk Songs, Spirituals and more, featuring piano virtuoso, Felix Spengler and tenor Josef Spencer, 7:30 PM, Friday June 17 at St. Agnes Episcopal Church, 1750 NW 3rd Avenue. Mr. Spengler is an internationally recognized pianist that “has thrilled audiences from Barcelona to New York with his commanding stage presence, wonderful musicality, and superb technique." Mr. Spencer "gives voice to the faith and hope of Negro Spirituals... The purity, power and truth of his voice will shiver your spine."
Saturday, June 18:
The festivities continue, 10:30, Saturday, June 18th with Overtown's annual Juneteenth parade featuring marching bands, steppers, floats, dancers and many surprises stepping off from the historic Lyric Theater and finishing at Booker T. Washington Senior High School.
Following the parade, Booker T. Washington Senior High School will host the Rally for Quality Education, with special guest, Bob Moses, founder of the Algebra Project starting at 1 PM. This event will feature various musical performances from local gospel, jazz, rhythm & blues artists, along with booths from local vendors, health booths, kid's activities, great food and a tour of the historic Chapman House.
The Algebra Project is retooling the organizing tradition of the civil rights movement to advance an American tradition that argues for education as the fundamental structure for opportunity and meaningful citizenship. In the early 1960's, Bob Moses, working with the Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee (SNCC or "snick"), organized a revolutionary grassroots movement that helped thousands of African Americans register to vote. More recent, as an educator, he started the Algebra Project to improve the way algebra is being taught in predominantly African American schools.
Following the rally at 4 PM, the talents of Dr. Nelson Hall, the Jubilate Vocal Ensemble and Kenya’s Mamlaka Music Club will explode with “Ngoma Ya Kiasili” (music of the ancestors); a festive collaboration performing Spirituals, Gospel selections, African Folk songs and jazz; complete with traditional dances and poetry in the Booker T. Washington Senior High School Auditorium, 1200 NW 6th Avenue.
The project also includes the premiere of a Kenyan Folk / Spiritual composition by Fulbright Scholar, Kennedy Wakia and Dr. Robert Gower of the University of Miami. The Jubilate Vocal Ensemble and Kenya’s Mamlaka Music Club will perform the finished work during the concert. “Working with the Kenyan Arts organizations, exposes us directly to “ngoma ya kiasil,” the music of our ancestors at the cradle of civilization,” said Dr. Nelson Hall, Jubilate’s founder. “We should through this collaboration begin to “reconnect – continue” with those interrupted traditions of our heritage; exporting musical artifacts that will lead to new understandings and changed perceptions.”
This exciting day ends with the Juneteenth Dinner Concert, featuring the music of Grammy Winner Fred 'Bam Bam" Scott and South African keyboardist and producer, Barry Stoffberg at the Church of the Open Door, 6001 NW 8 Avenue, Miami.Tickets:
Individual: $25 | Tables: $250 To order tickets, call:
954.550.0597 Sunday, June 19:
Sunday, June 19 at 5:30 PM, the festival returns to St. Agnes for the Juneteenth Freedom Rider’s Concert, based on the original Freedom Ride of 1961, when a racially mixed group of civil rights campaigners traveled through the southern states to challenge segregation. Capturing the emotional power of the era, this concert will include traditional and not so traditional music of the civil rights movement, including works by Charles Mingus, Mahalia Jackson, Thomas Dorsey, Oscar Brown, Jr., Bob Dylan, Max Roach, Abbey Lincoln and Nina Simone. To present this wonderfully diverse program are a group of incredible musicians, working together for the first time. They include, the legendary opera singer Ed Pierson; 2004 Grammy winner Fred "Bam Bam" Scott; tenor, Josef Spencer; Downbeat Magazine's Collegiate Jazz Vocalist of the year, Dr. Julie Jensen Silvera with local blues icons Ike and Val Woods and introducing Kamilah Kennedy, Leah Marie- McCoy, Anna Creed and the Jubilation Band.
About Juneteenth
Cited as the African American Independence Day, Juneteenth (Freedom Day) originates from Galveston, Texas, whereas on June 19th, 1865, the word of the Emancipation Proclamation reached the enslaved. It is recognized as a Statewide Observance in Florida through legislation authored by former State Representative Alzo Reddick in 1991. Today, Juneteenth is embraced and celebrated by all races and ethnicities in honor of freedom and emphasizes education and achievement.
