ALPHA KAPPA ALPHA SORORITY, INC.
Gamma Tau Omega Chapter of
Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority to Celebrate
Juneteenth with Western Round Up
Columbus, GA – Gamma Tau Omega Chapter of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc., presents its 2006 Juneteenth Western Round-Up dinner/dance on Friday, June 16, 8:00 p.m. in the North Hall of the Columbus Trade Center. Tickets for the dance are $35.00 per person. Everyone is asked to wear Western Attire.
For over 100 years African Americans in Texas and all over the country have been celebrating Juneteenth (or June 19, 1865) – the date when many of slaves in the state of Texas learned that they had been freed, two and a half years after the signing of the Emancipation Proclamation by President Abraham Lincoln. Today, Juneteenth commemorates African American freedom and emphasizes education and achievement. It is a day, a week, and in some areas a month marked with celebrations, guest speakers, picnics and family gatherings. It is a time for reflection and rejoicing.
So, put on your jeans and come join the ladies of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority for an evening of fun and fellowship with a western flair as we celebrate this historic day.
Proceeds benefit the chapter’s scholarship fund.
For information or tickets, call La Fini Mosby at 315-7825.

SunTrust Juneteenth Celebration
June 19, 2005
4:00p.m. - 8:00p.m. The Historic Atrium,
236 Auburn Avenue
Atlanta, GA 30308
The purpose of the SunTrust Juneteenth celebration is to celebrate the 140th year of The Emancipation Proclamation. This event will support our diversity initiatives with our African American employees, clients and community and further our commitment to diversity in our community at large.
Our goal is to provide an atmosphere where the history of the African American community will be re-enacted and experienced through a series of performances by local individuals and groups, including Rev. Timothy Flemming, Sr. and “The Old Time Camp Meeting Songs”, Akbar Imhotep, Storyteller, A M Praise from Shaw Temple AME Zion Church with Keyth Lee, former Musical Director of The Alliance Theatre, Pan People Steel Band & Oglethorpe Steel Drum Ensemble, as well as several local choral groups.
We have chosen the old Odd Fellows Annex Auditorium because of its historic significance. The site was dedicated by Booker T. Washington in 1914, one year prior to his death, and Louis Armstrong, Cab Calloway, Count Basie, Sam Cooke, Dianah Washington and others have performed here.
We would hope to have approximately 350 people attend the SunTrust Juneteenth Celebration. The tickets would be offered on a first come, first served basis to SunTrust Atlanta based employees but we would set aside up to 100 tickets to give to community leaders and friends in an effort to reach out beyond the company.
Refreshments will be served immediately following the celebration.
