Juneteenth with Western Round Up

Columbus, GA – Gamma Tau Omega Chapter of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc., presents its 2006 Juneteenth Western Round-Up dinner/dance on Friday, June 16, 8:00 p.m. in the North Hall of the Columbus Trade Center. Tickets for the dance are $35.00 per person. Everyone is asked to wear Western Attire.

For over 100 years African Americans in Texas and all over the country have been celebrating Juneteenth (or June 19, 1865) – the date when many of slaves in the state of Texas learned that they had been freed, two and a half years after the signing of the Emancipation Proclamation by President Abraham Lincoln. Today, Juneteenth commemorates African American freedom and emphasizes education and achievement. It is a day, a week, and in some areas a month marked with celebrations, guest speakers, picnics and family gatherings. It is a time for reflection and rejoicing.

So, put on your jeans and come join the ladies of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority for an evening of fun and fellowship with a western flair as we celebrate this historic day.

Proceeds benefit the chapter’s scholarship fund.
