What is Juneteenth?
On January 1, 1863 the Emancipation Proclamation declared that all
enslaved Africans in all the states in revolt against
the federal government are free. A group of
enslaved Africans in Texas did not find out word of
their freedom until June 19, 1865 (2 ˝ years after the
Emancipation Proclamation). When word came to the
enslaved Africans in Texas there were mass jubilant
celebrations. This freedom day celebration
continues throughout the United States of America every
year on or around June 19th across this country.
