June 19, 2008 - Museum of Fine Arts and Boston jewish Film Festival Encores Series - On Thursday, June 19 at 1:00 pm at the Musuem of Fine Arts in Boston, Dr. Alvin Poussaint (psychiatrist and author) will introduce the new documentary, "At Home in Utopia" by acclaimed filmmaker Michal Goldman. The film captures the struggle for equity and social justice across two generations in one cooperative apartment house in the Bronx- the Coops - built in the 1920s by immigrant workers fleeing oppression in their native lands.  "I fritst encountered the Coops when I came there to visit friends in the 1950s.  I had never seen a place like this, where blacks and whites were living together so easily.   Those visits to the Coops had a profound effect on me.  They were the first stage in my Civil Rights education."  Dr. Alvin Poussiant.  For tickets go to www.mfa.org or call 617-369-3306

June 16, 2007 - African Meeting House on Nantucket - 2Nd Annual Juneteenth Celebration

Featuring Jamele Adams, Dean of diversity at Brandeis University, also known as Harlym125, is a self-styled educator, activist, romantic, entertainer, poet, and actor. Harlym125 first found his way to slam poetry in the Ohio scene, but made his name on the stages of the boroughs of New York City and as a two-time slam champion of the Nyuorican Poet. One of the strongest political voices on the scene, 1two5 has an undeniable presence. Harlym125 will be joined by local talented singers and performers. Join us on the lawn for refreshments after the performance. Learn some history and have some fun!

BOSTON
 June 19, 2005 - Friends of Mount Auburn Cemetery - "Juneteenth: A Celebration of African American Heritage at Mount Auburn "– a walking tour with Bree Detamore Harvey, Mount Auburn.  Juneteenth began in Texas as a celebration of emancipation following the end of the Civil War. Today, it is celebrated throughout the United States and beyond as a day to commemorate the achievements of African Americans.  During this walk, we will pay honor to some of the notable African Americans buried at Mount Auburn, including author and abolitionist Harriet Jacobs; George Ruffin, the first African American judge in Massachusetts and his wife, Josephine St. Pierre Ruffin; and U.S. District Attorney William Henry Lewis.  Friends of Mount Auburn Cemetery, 580 Mount Auburn Street, Cambridge, MA 02138. June 17, 2005 - To honor the 140th Juneteenth celebration, "zili" is sponsoring an evening of music, dance, and spoken word at the Brazilian Cultural Center in Cambridge. "zili" is a band that performs music rooted in the rhythms and spirituality of the African  Diaspora -- music of Haiti, Brazil, Cuba, West Africa and the jazz, R&B, and neo-soul of the US.  Also featured is AfroBlues,  one of Boston's emerging poets on fire!
