| The Central Area Motivation Program (CAMP)
is one of 31 community action agencies started in the State of Washington and has been fighting the impact of poverty on the Seattle community for 40 years. Today, CAMP continues to provide hope and resources for Central Area residents in need. We serve over 20,000 people in excess of 50,000 times annually. Our organization combats poverty by advocating for social change, removing barriers to self-sufficiency and building community capacity. Through CAMP’s many programs and services, we shelter the homeless, offer employment and training programs for the unemployed and under-employed, educate and mentor at-risk students, feed the hungry, and keep numerous families from going without heat during the fall and winter months.
CAMP is holding its 2nd Annual Juneteenth Celebration on Saturday, June 18, 2005, from 5:30 p.m. – 10:00 p.m. at the CAMP Firehouse located at 722 – 18th Avenue in Seattle’s Central Area. Tickets are $35 and include a soul food dinner prepared by Chef Jemil and non-alcoholic beverages. Beer and wine are available at a no-host bar. United States Congresswoman Cynthia McKinney from the 4th District of Georgia is our Keynote Speaker. The program will highlight music for all ages, community leadership awards and the story of Juneteenth. Tickets can be purchased by calling (206) 568-3530 or emailing camp@voluteinc.com. One
Famm Records, Inc. and Tee Motocross in Tacoma will
celebrated their 6th Annual Juneteenth Celebration on
June 18, 2006 at 1504 Martin Luther King Jr Way,
Tacoma WA 98404 from 12-7pm. This annual event is
part block party, part celebration, and most important
to showcase unity within the community. For those of you
that don't know, June 19, a.k.a., Juneteenth, is the
celebration of the Emancipation of African Americans.
Now don't be fooled; this event is open to everyone. Why
celebrate Black History Month only in February? Every
year FAMM devotes an entire day of song, music and food
to the community. Did I mention this event is totally
FREE?
With the help of sponsors, they were able to provide all
free of charge, two jumpers for the kids, over 1,000 hot
dogs, free CD's and sodas! Throughout the day dancers,
skits, and music from various genres of music
entertained the crowd. At the other end of the event the
audience saw a preview of some of the local car clubs
who will be displaying their cars in the upcoming Import
Car Show. For many kids this was their first time to see
"3-wheel motion" up close and personal. One of the cars
danced to the windows literally broke. Many thanks to
Stop Mart, Bill's Towing, Def Jam, Universal, BMG, SONY,
Red Distribution, Hard Knock Wheels, Destiny Center, The
New Y, Jones Soda, Merry Makers, Pebbles Playhouse and
Pre-School, Data NW Minuteman Press and the Fish House.
Special thanks City of Tacoma, Tacoma Police and the
entire Hilltop Community. Hope to see you there next
year! |
