June 18-19 2005 - Our Family Skate Association  & SkateGroove.com - OFSA and SkateGroove.com have partnered to host a two-day Juneteenth celebration in S.E., Washington DC’s Anacostia Park. The celebration will focus on the positive strides made in the African American community since the end of slavery. It will also highlight the cultural diversity among the descents of Africans that is the result of the slave trade. The event will bring a multitude of organizations into the community in an effort to foster connections that will empower and uplift the community. There will be information booths highlighting the National African American Roller Skating Project, activities, and demonstrations focused on history, health and fitness, and empowerment (education, business ownership, home ownership, etc.). By collaborating with the DC Tree House Project, the DC Aquatic Education Center and the National Capital Parks East staff the event will provide information to event goers about the natural resources of the area. A major facet of the event will be the inclusion of other international cultures of African descendents that like the African American culture are the result of the slave trade. By embracing other cultures with similar historical roots we will come to better understand who we were and who we have become. Roller skating will be highlighted as a national cultural phenomenon in the African American community. There is no admission for this event.
