WASHINGTON – Today, Republican National Committee (RNC) Chairman Michael Whatley released a statement celebrating Juneteenth:
“On this day in 1865, Union troops arrived in Galveston, Texas with the powerful words of President Abraham Lincoln’s Emancipation Proclamation freeing those remaining enslaved Americans. As we promise to never forget the evils of slavery, we strive to make America a more perfect Union everyday. Juneteenth reminds us of the value of our freedom, the powers of our God-given right to equality, the importance of hope in challenging times, and that we must always stand together united as Americans.”
Juneteenth is the oldest nationally celebrated commemoration of the ending of slavery in the United States.
