What Visitors are saying about Juneteenth?

“As a child, I was told about the fact of ‘Juneteenth’ and the importance of the history, because I was born on this very important date, in 1958. I was often ridiculed at an early age, when I told everyone that I was born on ‘Juneteenth’. Of course I didn’t know any better at the time, but I know it did upset me when everyone laughed about my knowledge this date in Texas history. I would always proudly announce to them that, ‘Yes Ma’am or Sir, it is the Emancipation Proclamation Day in Texas, When all slaves were made free men and women.” Shoot, I was only about 4 or 5 at the time, a Caucasian youth in Dallas, Texas, and I knew more about this important date than anyone else that I met. I gradually moved away from announcing this bit of information to all, who I met over the years, because of the ridicule I received as a child. But today, I am proud to say that, “Yes, I was born on June 19th, or Juneteenth. And if you do not know what that means, look it up. You will find, that it is a very important date in the lives of all American’s. And I proudly celebrate my birthday on this date, in the Land of the Free, and the Home of the Brave.”

“I just want to thank you for the page. It clearly did something for me even though I cannot put my finger on it, but I will tell you it has been an awesome awakening experience for me and I will tell others about this page.”

“I feel a special connection to Juneteenth because June 19 is MY BIRTHDAY. I first heard of Juneteenth in 1985 when I heard the Juneteenth Blues Festival on National Public Radio. I am not African-American, but freedom from bondage is a concept that stirs the hearts of liberty-loving people regardless of ethnicity.”

“I would like to commend this website. Many people do not think of the horrors suffered by the slaves brought to the “New World” unwillingly. Taken from the families, friends, and homes forcefully. Many lives were lost needlessly. I have watched movies and such relating to the times of slavery and am disgusted by the actions of those who thought they were the superior race among all people. Unfortunately, probably half of them still believe it to be true today. I am a white female and feel shame for what “my race” did to those who were brought here and stripped of all dignity and rights, beaten, raped, maimed, tortured, and murdered. I myself did not come from a family that owned plantations but still feel the shame. I’m very glad to have been introduced to this website and hope Juneteenth is one day made into a Federal Holiday, not just to get another paid holiday but for the recognition it deserves.”

“I was unaware of this celebration, until 4th grade grandson came home with homework. And began to tell me the history of this day, I thought this is so awesome my black prince so excited to tell me some of his history. I’m usually the one telling him. Thank you so much for this site he’s found so much useful information to take back and share with his classmates and teachers.”

“Thank you for this great information. I have copied it for my grandchildren. This is the first of their summer history lessons. They will have no opportunity to learn this in their public school history. THANK YOU!!! .”

“I read the article in the Detroit News. I was glad to see that you are attempting to make your Juneteenth Celebration diverse and inclusive. Good luck. “

“This site is a wealth of knowledge. As a native Texan I knew about the connection with the Emancipation Proclamation, but had no idea why it took so long for Texans to learn of their freedom. Thanks for elaborating about General Granger and his troops.”

“I am a native Galvestonian, I have found the information on your web site to be very informatative, I’ve always been told of the meaning of Juneteenth, but I never really sit and read of the events myself. Having found your web site I can now sit my children down and let them read of the events themselves so that they may get the full understanding of the very important day and the roll their little city (as they call it) played in all of this. And they will also understand why I myself do not work on Juneteenth, even if I have to use my vacation time, it is a day to be observed by all but especially by African American that has the job stability & vacation time available!”

“This was a wonderful site. Can’t wait to call my daughter and son-in-law and share this site with them and encourage them to participate in the Juneteenth celebration in their new home town, Plano, Texas.”

“It is wonderful to have a black acknowledgement day such as Juneteenth. This shows how strong the black race is. We made it through slavery, segregation, and we still face discrimination today so it is always great to hear the black community joining together, to acknowledge each other. we need to pull together and stay strong.”

“I am a forty-nine year old Af-Am man and it makes me so sorry to know that I had never heard of the Juneteenth celebration until I was forty-five. I beleive that I am not alone in this and that there are many, many others who also do not know of this but would be proud to. I must say that I came to know of this by way of the voices on the Tom Joyner Morning Show. The birth of my God-daughter on Juneteenth 1998 gives me a special feeling of pride. It makes me so happy to link her birthday with the celebration. I would be honored to join your mailing list and become part of the Juneteenth Family. “

“I have truly enjoyed your presentation and much valued information concerning the Juneteenth Celebration and its MEANING TO US AS BLACK PEOPLE. My brothers and sistas keep up the good work, it would be a pleasure if we all would just pull together as the other races do…just think of the power we could have. God Bless!”

“It was great to find a history of the hoilday so succnintly done and at one’s finger tips. The information was quite helpful and the web site gives ways to further explore the issue. Thank you for a job well done!”

Thanks to Essence Magazine I learned of your website and have decided to learn more about the history of Juneteenth. Thank you.”

“I would just like to extend my appreciation for having this website. After being told that I wasn’t expected to know what Juneteenth was because I wasn’t black I had to find out for myself. This site allowed me the opportunity to gain a greater insight and will allow me to educate my professor that which she does not comprehend. I was born and raised in Texas and that is where it all began. Thank you once again.”

“Congratulations on putting together a very meaningful and necessary web site. I am especially gratified to see our dear friend Tom Feelings’ images so prominently featured. The Middle Passage is absolutely the first key to understanding the meaning of Juneteenth, and the quotations you have selected are most appropriate. There is an aspect of the Juneteenth celebration that does need to be addressed. I heard one person comment that perhaps the whole celebration is misguided because it supports the notion that someone else had to tell us that we were free. There is something to this, to be sure, but I think the real point (as I see it) of the celebration needs to be underscored time and again, to put to rest some of those objections. That real point is that to the extent that the legalized abolition of slavery (the end of its legitimacy and enforcement by force of state power) was a goal that was mightily and courageously struggled for by so many for so long, it is a landmark worth noting, but, more importantly, Juneteenth says that until the last of us were truly free (in the legal sense) none of us were really free. Keep up the good! “

“look forward to spreading the word to family and friends “

“This is my first time hearing of this type of celebration, and I am looking forward to attending with my nephews. “This was the best web site I visited today.”

“I wrote to the Daily News in New York and asked them to put a little mention of this in there opinion / editorial page last year and they neither responded or printed anything about this. There needs to be a mass way of telling our people about this holiday. I found out about it while reading something my mother had given to me but not a lot of people had heard about it including my mother. Please help me to think of ways to get this holiday to be as wide spread and celebrated as the 4th of July because in reality, this is OUR independence day.”

“I AM VERY PROUD OF JUNETEENTH WEB SITE. I HAVE HEARD TALK ABOUT JUNETEENTH BUT, DID NOT KNOW YOU WERE ON LINE. “I wanted to let you all know what a great job you are doing getting information out about Juneteenth. I’m working on putting a program together, and with your help it is going to be successful. Thank you and keep up the good work.”

“I would just like to say that among all of the horrible things accessible on the internet it is great to see a website dedicated to such a great event. I am a teenage female caucasion from southern california, a place with few black people but many other minorities, and I feel it is very important to educate people that all people are equal and deserve to be treated with respect. It is my hope that more people will celebrate Juneteenth and recognize it as the first step in the long process of eliminating racism. Thank you for your contribution.”

“This is excellent! There is so much history that goens untouched and unexplored. I am godly proud of your efforts and success as it relates to educating others on the history of our heritage.”

Thank you for the opportunity to comment, and happy Juneteenth to all.”

“I am so thrilled to have found this website. I am doing research on Juneteenth celebration activities, food, etc. and I found everyting I needed here. I belong to the Black History Ministry at the church I attend and were are planning to commemorate the Middle passage in June with another local group that has been doing it for 8 years now. We will meet on the shore of the Atlantic ocean here in Miami at sunrise and begin the service which will include drumming, singing , dancing reading, offering to our ancestors, etc. We hope to follow this up with a Juneteenth Celebration that same week. Peace”

“This is a joyous, festive event for all African-Americans. Our event this year is June 17th on-the-square/Central Park in Mansfield, OH. This is an all day event. “Wonderful site. Will tell all my friends about it.”

“Finally, a site dedicated to informing the community about such an important event. It’s sad to go to the Juneteenth celebrations in the city and see people there who have no real understanding of the purpose! I’ll continue to promote and support this site. Infinite thanx!”

“I praise your website. In watching a episode of “Who Wants To Be a Millionaire” a woman could not answer the question of what is Juneteenth. I have since told those I know. Your website gives even more insight. Thank you for helping to educate the masses.”

“If it hadn’t been for a question on Juneteenth on “Who Wants to be a Millionaire”, I, along with millions of other people would probably still be in the dark about this important date. Your site is wonderful and has certainly educated me.”

“Thanks for your information. I’m writing an ESL online curriculum that will feature Juneteenth at www.englishtown.com. Look for it in June!”

“I’m an Educator in the Alameda County Juvenile Court & Community Schools. You can’t imagine how pleased I am to see important information concerning our history unfolding on the WWW. This is the will of God that we all come to the knowledge of the Truth… The truth is what will set us all free no matter what’s the issue. Thank God for you and the real story is reaching each generation. Keep up the good work and I’ll keep checking out your web-site. ” And it came to pass ” Praise God from whom all blessings flow…flow on my people! ” Power through the People “

“Thank you for all of the wonderful info that I learned as a child growing up in Carthage, Texas. When I moved to Seattle, Washington 36 years ago, it seemed that no one in the entire state had ever heard of Juneteenth. I deliberately married on June 19 so that I would never forget the wonderful stories and joy that I felt during the Juneteenth Celebration in my home town of Carthage, Texas. I am happy to see that so many of my fellow brothers and sisters are getting the “word” and are appreciating the efforts and dedication of our ancestors. I am sponsoring one of the Juneteenth Celebrations in Seattle, Washington this year, June 16-18, 2000 with a 125-voice choir from Hamburg, Germany singing in the African-American gospel stylings in both German and English. Continue with the good works. If we can be of assistance to you, please don’t hesitate to let us know.”

“This is great for our youth – praise God, keep up the good work.”

“I am a fifth grade teacher currently taking a class that is giving me all sorts of ideas to use in teaching our African American children about their heritage. This week we were discussing Juneteenth, and I said to myself “This is something that the kids don’t know!” Now I am going to incorporate a Juneteenth celebration into the usual end of year graduation activiies. This way the children will be able to learn new information, celebrate their people’s past and their individual futures, and have loads of fun in the process! Thanks for this wonderful site!”

“Excellent website. Very informative.”

“That was the most inspirational masterpiece i have ever read in my whole life. i want to thank you for that. It made me realize that African Americans today dont know what our ancestors went through just to get us and education, freedom, civil rights and everything that was considered living in liberty. may God bless you on your good art work and i was wondering is there anyway that i could purchase any of these writings or art work. contact me on my email.”

“Greetings from Fort Valley State University a HBCU in South Georgia. I am commending the editors and contributors. I greatly appreciate you all widening my eyes to the struggle. An appreciative freshmen”

“Until yesterday at a PTA meeting discussing plans for a “Juneteenth” activity for the children, I had never heard of Juneteenth or I had forgotten about it. So I said to my husband, I will look it up on the internet. Thank God for the internet. Now my family and other familes I know will not continue in ingnorance concerning our heritage. Thank you for all you have done. Continue the great work that you are doing.”

“The artwork was spectular. The design and the flow is to be commended”

“Although, I am a little green to the internetting world; I am extremely knowledgeable to being born Black in America and proud of it. The Juneteenth website just added a little more pride to my soul and I thought my cup was already filled to the brim. Keep up the fantastic work and look for “Kay’s Creative Gifts & Artworks” to join you soon.”

“Praises, Praises, Praises. This Website is wonderful and very informative.”

“This website has provided me with a wider understanding of the agony and the pain my black brothers suffered on the Middle Passage, and if it weren’t for their strong will to survive, I wouldn’t be here to express myself or even be alive today.”

“This is the best web site I have seen about the pass and what Juneteenth is really about. Thank you for this site!!!”

“Great site! love the info made available to visitors.we won’t perish from the lack of knowledge thanks to you. God Bless your endeavor”

“Congratulations on an extremely nice web site!”

“This is great to let the people know about Juneteenth. As we go through Passover, a move should be made to make Juneteenth as important and recognized as Passover. They both serve as the same thing, just for different people.”

“I had never heard of Juneteenth until I moved to Texas, 23 years ago. Now I have told all of my family, back in Ohio, about this most important holiday. I’m glad there is a website for people to go to get more information.”

“I visited your site after reading about the exhibition of the Henrietta Marie coming to our area. I am a teacher, and I am planning on having my fourth and fifth graders learn about this historic celebration. Thanks for all the great information and background your site provides!”

“I found your site whilst browsing the internet in my search for resources to use on a educational slavery website for children in Bristol, England. A large number of the population of Bristol have their origins in the Caribbean, and therefore through direct descendents, the slave trade. I feel it vital that organisations such as ‘Juneteenth’ be brought to the attention of as wide an audience as possible in order to bridge the gap between myth and real understanding of a period in time that had such socio-economic significance worldwide. I have therefore included, with your kind permission, a link to my web pages (www.hpslavery.freeservers.com) and hope this will help in some way to promote your superb work.”

“I’m glad to see this site. We have a Juneteenth Celebration in Pasco, Washington. It’s sometimes hard to explain to local businesses and media verbally what Juneteenth is all about. This area is mostly caucasian and hispanics. Your information will be very useful for our planning committee. Thanks.”

“I am a preservice teacher who will graduate in Dec 2000. I am creating a Slavery unit for my future Social Studies class and wanted a lesson to teach about Juneteenth to inform others of its significance. I also am a mother of an African American daughter and will be able to inform and celebrate with her part of her own heritage. Also my birthday is June 19th, so I just want to say keep up the good work as your site will help me with my life and my future role in teaching young minds of the importance of each individual’s freedom and how it came about.”

“I think this is a wonderful site and I am very pleased to see it. I believe African Americans should make an effort to perserve our history through documentation. I joined a historical group which is dedicated to historical preservation. It is certainly exciting to find documented parts of our heritage. Juneteenth has thrived in our Gulf coast community and each year the celebrations continue to grow.”

“I believe your website will act as a catalyst for those of us searching for answers and for truths to check out the literature and to visit Africa, to open the dialog between our African, caribbean, and Haitian brothers who now cross the waters free of chains. We need to take our businesses across the waters and help our ancestors rebuild our forgotten homeland. We were forced to build this one now lets go home and take care of those who were deliberately cut off.”

“Wonderful site. I’m telling all my friends about it. Thanks….”

“Thank God for freedom of our mind, soul, and spirit”

“Las Vegas is currentty organizing its FIRST Juneteenth Celebration!!!Thank you for this site that allows us to look at cities that have been organizing for years.”

“The page is wonderful. I really enjoyed reading about our heritage. Thank you for taking time to put the information on the web. Hope to hear from your soon. Keep up the work. May God continue to Bless you and continue your widsom and knowledge. “

“My birthday is June 19,1945, since I’ve learned about the Juneteenth, I combine the celebrations. This is how my grandchildren learn their heritage.Because we tell stories about our ancestors, and celebrate life.”

“i just think it’s great that people of all cultures have access to an informative web site such as this”

“When we forget the atrocities of the past, we are doomed to arrive at the same place in the future. Contemporary forms of enslavement continue to plague our communities because we fail to study and understand our history appropriately. Witness the disdain many of the younger generation of our youth, the children of America’s most widely educated generation of African Americans, show for education. How soon we forgot! We must teach our children about the true meaning of Juneteenth if we are to survive the 21st Century’s more sophisticated forms of enslavement.”

“This morning, I am truly impressed, inspirec, and impacted as to the greatness of our people. We truly are to be celebrated as we, one day, exemplify that enthusiasm towards each other. As a teacher of African Americans, Asians, Hispanic, and Europeans, I am encouraged to be in a position to teach ALL CHILDREN of not just our past, but our greatness. You’re doing a fine job. Just keep on doing what you’re doing.”

“I would like to thank you for the enormous amount of information I received at this site. I am very interested in the history of Juneteenth. I am in the process of gathering information and ideas to present a proposal to City Hall, in the hopes that I can get their support to sponsor a Juneteenth Celebration this year where I live. It is so important to emphasis our African American History to our people, young and old. So much has been lost, it is up to us to keep the lines of communication open. African Americans should have knowledge about their history, unfortunately, that knowledge is not taught to our children in school. Once again, I want to thank you for this site and all the information received.”

“Thank you for establishing the site. It is a source of information and pride for us”

“I enjoyed this site tremendously. The knowledge and the art are so vital to our community. Regardless of color, I take great pride in passing the website address to others. Thank you for the knowledge.”

“An awesome task started to awaken those sleeping in our time. If our children only knew how they are again placing us in the struggle.”

“I have enjoyed your information very much. I recently became very involved in the study of my personal “roots”, and it can be painful at times, but it has made a change in me that I am still learning to cope with. Never the less, I am proud of who I am, and my African and Choctaw ancestors. Thank you for showing us the truth– it does have way of setting one free!”

“While surfing I found this interesting info.”Granville Sharp, [an] English philanthropist and anti-slavery activist, was interested in obtaining a ruling against slavery in a test case, and in that effort helped join together a discontented slave, James Somersett, with Francis Hargrave, a brilliant young lawyer. On 22 June 1772, Chief Justice Mansfield ruled that Somersett should go free, as slavery was ‘so odious, that nothing can be suffered to support it.’ This ruling effectively brought about freedom for the slaves of England, Ireland and Wales. A similar ruling in 1778 (again engineered by Sharp) freed the small number of slaves residing in Scotland.” How’s that for Juneteenth in England !”

“I wanted to thank you so much. I’m a junior at Ruskin High School in Kansas City. I’m currently taking college credit classes. I have a research paper due in my Amer. Hist. 101 class and I found alot of helpful information on your web site. Thankyou again,”

“I am pleased to browse the internet and find something mind boggling and unforgettable as the mysterious photoes that depict my people, through out the continous struggle for equality that my people have had to face, on the web. I hope to continuously seach and find art and poetry that, like this uplifts my people and respectfully acknowledges that our history does not begin not end with the much respected Dr. MLK. We are so much more.”

“I love you because God created us equally, without the approval of the ill-fated governments that does not have the interest of humanity at heart. I can only comment on one important thing, love your mothers, fathers, and children, that is the only way things will inprove on this planet., No political party, relgion, or government will replace the love of a family. Try as they make they are anti people, and family.”

“Very professional and well organized site. I found it non-threatening and very informative.”

“Thank you for the opportunity to commenton the wonderful worldwide Juneteenth activities. We are planning something for Marcus Garvey Library in London England. Please keep us infomed especially for the State of Washington which is my birthplace Our speciality for that period is the health and medical treatment in Africa and the African Diaspora. Friends of Marcus Garvey Library and Heritage Group Chair K.W. Spence-Lewis Consultant Researcher www.marcusgarveylibrary.org.uk.”

“I truly learned a lot from this website. Thank you! Tom Feelings book was excellent. I took it out of my library. If it wasn’t for this website, I wouldn’t have done so otherwise.”

“I was looking for information for a history report when I stumbled across your site. I have never found such compelling material put together so well. Thank you very much for this site.”

“I think this is a great Web site and I’m glad that it is offered over the internet, because how many African Americans can say that they have taken classes on the African American culture during High school or beyond. “

“I really appreciate the level of hardwork put into making this web-site what I know it as. It really has provided a tremendous amount of knowledge for me and has allowed me to grow culturally and spiritually.”

“This is a subject which should be included in history lessons the world over, as it is because of all our ancestors that this holiday exists. I pray this will continue and I plan to help keep it alive. Our church is planning a celebration for next year and the years thereafter.”

“Thank you for providing a websit to inform African-Americans about the Juneteenth Celebration. I for one was not aware of it’s celebration until 1988, when I was stationed in Tucson, Arizona. When I inquired with people as to what exactly was “Juneteenth” the people I asked did not really know the true meaning of the celebration. I didn’t learn the true meaning of the celebration until I went to visit my sister the following year in Austin, TX and every since then I have celebrated this holiday everywhere that I have lived. My sisters and I are orginally from Tennesse and they really enjoy the festivities given down there in Austin, TX. Being from a small town in Tennessee, we also have a similar celebration of sorts, we call it the “First Saturday of September” it’s sort of like a huge “Black Family Reunion.” This celebration occurs each year in JacksCreek, Tn and is also known as the “Cawthorn Family Reunion.” This is typically a time to see and meet relatives that have moved away from this rural area and those that remain at home. The weekend is full of fun and festivities. Once an “outsider” has encountered the “good-times” to be found at this celebration they seem to come back year after year. Once again thank you for providing this wonderful website and much continued success in spreading the word about a holiday that we as a race can celebrate and embrace. Much Love,”

“I love your website and will recommend it on my radio program”

“As an American History teacher I was captured by the piercing illustrations of the middle passage. I am planning to utilize this web site in the classroom. Kudos to Tome Feelings! He has given me a powerful teaching tool.”

“Hello It’s 3:am in the morning and I could not go back to sleep. I decided to check out Black Families on the web. Well, I am pleased that I did. Your web site is very educating and moving. I truly feel that my ancestors wanted me to know this and spread the knowledge. Juneteenth shall now become my families Independence Day of celebration. You have my support and respect. Please continue with the wisdom. It’s 5:09 am now and I’m still not sleepy (smile). I guess my ancestors feel that I should continue gaining knowledge. I will forward your site to others. I will vist your site often. Thank you for being here.”

One of the bright spots on the Web!

Keep up the good works of providing info on juneteenth celebrations around the country. The African American Chamber of Commerce salute you. We will use info from your site to make the celebration in Victoria, Texas a success. God bless!

Thank God for the internet. I have learned more from this one session than I ever knew in my life. I hope more people find this site. Keep up the good work.

Great web page! I am a Louisiana native who lived many years as an adult
in Texas (Galveston, Houston and Dallas). Now I live in Parague, the Czech Republic, where I teach English as a foreign langauge. I am using your web site to teach some of my more advanced students about Juneteenth, African American culture and American history. Thanks for a great site!

I was asked to organize an event at my workplace in recognition of Juneteenth.
Unfortunately, I was not aware of the celebration. Your website has been most resourceful and educating. I am proud to have the opportunity to take part in such a wonderful celebration. Much thanks to you and your sponsors for giving me (and many others) the spirit to keep fighting for the freedom & unity of all!

This website is awesome and powerful!

DEFINITELY A NEEDED WEBSITE!

Wonderful web site. It was refreshing to find such wonderful detail on an African
American event such as The Middle Passage. I learned information that I had no idea existed. Thank you very much for developing this site, and keep up the good work. I am telling all I know about this web page. Thank you!!

June 19 is now my Family’s Independents Day! Thank you for a history lesson that has been been long over due! I will also give my employees that day off!

thanks so much for the history of Juneteenth. I teach 3rd grade and your site helped me get the background knowledge needed to teach about Juneteenth. Thanks again.

This web site is like paradise. I am a 38yo A/A male in the military. I got my first taste of Juneteenth while stationed in LA. Since then I no longer celebrate the 4 July as my day of independence. This page should be visited by millions every year. I have already sent it to all my e-mail friends. God Bless and Be Encouraged

YOUR WEB PAGE IS A DELIGHT AND SO INFORMATIVE. AS A TEACHER I SEE EVERYDAY WHAT A LACK OF KNOWLEDGE ABOUT OUR HISTORY DOES TO THE SELF ESTEEM OF OUR YOUNG PEOPLE. KEEP ON KEEPING ON!

Thank-you for raising my consciousness up another level. How could I be
fourty-something and not know of this celebration? You have all of my love and support!

I know that this is irrelavent, but I am white. I think this event should be celebrated by anyone/and everyone who thinks it is worth celebrating, and most people where I live know nothing about it. What do you think? I have a bi-racial daughter who probably wouldn’t be here if freedom was not given. I am very happy about this day. We usually have booths set up where people sell things, we have an entertainment contest, we have family feud, games for the children, door prizes, and this year I want to do a water play area for the kids ( because its usually hot).

This website is fabulous! We are so glad to find it here on the web. Keep up the good work!

This sight is wonderful and I am very pleased with abundance of information I found here. It really hepled me understand why Juneteenth was celebrated and it also gave valid reasons for why the celebrations should continue.

What a wonderful website so full of our history…Thank you for broadening my
knowledge….peace love and blessings..

This is a very positive thing (this web site). I encourage every brother and sister to
spread learn our history. And each one teach one

I just want to say that I think this web page is really nice. It is very informative
and I hope to see more things like this in the future. Black people helped build this
country and we are truly a beautiful people. It is time we let people know and celebrate
it.

As an elementary school art teacher I have often times used African-American history in my art classes. I never knew about Juneteenth and I was very pleased to find your website. I will use this info this week, being the week of Juneteenth to inspire my youngsters to think about our Country’s history as it relates to African-Americans. I will definitely pass on this website to my students, especially Tom Feelings book, Middle Passage. Thank you!

thank you thank you thank you

I came upon your web site today as link from a review of posthumous release of Ralph Ellison’s “Juneteenth”. I was at work and in a hurry, so I quickly clicked on several links and was about to leave when I hit the ‘Pictorial’ link…and I was blown away…
…for all the movies and the books and the history lessons, nothing has
had the impact of 3 minutes reviewing that link….I will be back for more
and often. My sincere and deepest thanks and compliments.

I am an African American Woman in the United States Air Force. Currently I am stationed in Japan and we are preparing for our Juneteenth celebration. I found your site informative, enlightening, as well as beautiful. We don’t get too much information on our culture here, much less our history. It was very refreshing to see a site such as this on-line for US. Thank you very much.

The event of Juneteenth is a celebration of FREEDOM for all people who have ever been enslaved. It is the beginning of the end of oppression and the start of a new world life. Explore the new worlds and take on stores. Settle. Explore – store – settle.

Incredible site! Tom Feelings – very moving. I own the book, considering a print.

Thank you,

Thanks for your efforts and motivation…WE in Delaware will lend our support of this worthy celebration of our history. Again, THANKS

Like many adult African Americans, I have lived for 38 years and never heard of
Juneteenth. I am honored to have found such a informative vehicle as juneteenth.com. Please keep up the good work. I am going to tell everyone I know to check out your website.

Thanks! There are still so many African-Americans that do not know about this day. Thanks to this web page, you have truley helped educate me on my history. Don’t ever stop!

THANKS FOR THE GLORIOUS SITE !!! MY CHILDREN AND I ENJOYED ALL THE OFFERINGS AND SHARED THEM WITH ARE FRIENDS AND FAM HERE IN BOSTON, MA. PLEASE KEEP UP THE GOOD WORK. WE ARE THIRSTY AND YOU HAVE GIVEN US SWEET DEEP WELL WATER.

This is an excellent site. The originators and all who helped get it together should pat themselves on the back and all Black people should stand and give you a well deserved applaud.

I am a fourth grade teacher in Berkeley, California. We have an assembly each year to recognize Juneteenth. This year I found your website and was able to educate myself and my students, using your history page. We are reciting the poems from your site. Thanks

This is a wonderful idea, a place to exchange ideas to offer support and to learn all at the same time, hats off, to the organizers.

Thank you for your powerful and moving poems regarding Juneteenth. Continue to keep the light shining for the next generation of brothers and sisters coming behind us.

What a true blessing it is to see more and more positive, strides of The Negro- Black African/american in the world of “high technology”, and not just images and faces in the media portraying the negetive. Keep it coming!!!!!

Excellent, moving site. Things like this seem to renew my fervor for life.

Like many adult African Americans, I have lived for 38 years and never heard of
Juneteenth. I am honored to have found such a informative vehicle as juneteenth.com. Please keep up the good work. I am going to tell everyone I know to check out your website.

Fantastic Information. We, the military forces here in Misawa, Japan are also celebrating Juneteenth in recognition of our freedom and have made a link to your site from www.misawa.com Thank you for an excellent source of knowledge.

I love the spirit of this entire “Juneteenth” Celebration. I would like to commend everyone who made this website and the acknowledgement of “Juneteenth” possible. This is quite an inspiration to the devlopment of our people. I think it’s extremely important to know thy history to know thyself and I thank everyone who made it possible.

This is great. It’s great to find someone get the history of Juneteenth correct. The Celebration was not because the proclamation was signed. Lincoln signed the Emancipation Proclamation in late 1962, a year and a half AFTER the war began. It had no practical affect on slavery, because it only applied to states engaged in war against the Union. Slavery in the Union was still legal. Lincoln had no control or influence on Confederate States. The only practical application of the proclamation was to make it difficult for Britian to enter the war to help the Confederacy. The reduction of cotton and tobacco exports was hurting Britian, but Britian’s Labor Party was very anti-slavery. The proclamation made it politically impossible for the Queen to side with the south. With the war over, and Union soldiers present to enforce the proclamation, it was now enforcable and slaves could actually walk off the plantation. There was actually something to celebrate.

I think it is with great pleasure to see something with such great importance to African Americans and their history being displayed here. I for one am always interested in our history . The unique thing is that in every one of these 50 United States there is a rich History about African Americans and our strides as a people, but so much of it is yet to be explored.

I am always for preserving it because if we as AA don’t no one will no how great a people our ancestors were and how they like no other group in America contributed VASTLY to the creation of this great nation. What the celebration of Junteenth means to me is a chance to reflect on my ancestors who for so many years sweat and worked hard in deplorable conditions for FREE to build America THE RICHEST COUNTRY IN THE WORLD TODAY. Every time I think about it it gives me the shivers. I am so very proud of my African-American heritage and June 19th really is a time to celebrate my achievements as an individual and to continue strive for excellence and to remeber most of all we as African Americans come from a race of people whose ancestors were the strongest choosen from Africa to come to America, and build it with there 400 yrs+ FREE labor. My AA brothers and sisters let us celebrate our achievements and keep in mind WE ARE SURVIVORS and let us strive always for excellence in every thing because god gave us unlike any other race the ability to SURVIVE DESPITE CONDITIONS. I love you brothers and sisters. HAPPY JUNETEENTH.

P>S> Remeber this is yours and my country, so let us go out there and take what rightfully belongs to us.(i.e. oppurtunities, education, etc)

Thank you for making this site available. Sad to say, I did not know tht this day existed until I was looking thourgh my DADS calendar, A Tribute To Men of Color and Their Children. I did not know what is was, so a few us at work decided to look it on the internet and your site was the first stop we made. Again, thank you!

I am so pleased to see that there is detailed information on Juneteenth. I am an assist teacher for a Mpls. school and I wanted to educate my students on the history of Juneteenth. Each year they celebrate it and have no idea why. Thank you for the information.

I found your information on the History of Juneteenth quite knowledgable. I used your information to explain to the members of the Juneteenth Committee who didn’t have a clue to what Juneteenth meant. Don’t participate in a cause when you don’t know the background of it, I always say. Thank you for keeping the African-American History alive!!! Please, keep this site very active!

It is important that we collectively recognize and pay tribute to our ancestors who, in spite of the holocaust of enslavement, survived and made significant contributions to this foreign land; and to those of us who have inculcated the psychological scar of enslavement, who choose to honor, remember and dedicate ourselves to the collective well-being of our entire community.

Wow! Thaks for the info. I’m working with an organization that’s planning a Juneteenth Celebration and my knowledge of the Juneteenth was very inadequate. I found your site informative, eduational and just plain impressive. peace and love.

DOMO ARAGATO, it is Japaneese for Thank You. It has been a pleasure exploring your website. I am in the Air Force and am currently stationed at Misawa AB, Japan. A group of us have recently gotten together to promote a Juneteenth celebration on base here at Misawa. Unfortunately this was a first time venture, and neither of us had any previous experience putting together such an event. Needless to say your website has proven to be invaluable. Not only has it given me a wealth of additonal information, it has also linked me to other individual doing the same thing at other Air Force Bases around the world. I have e-mailed them requesting assistance in this venture. Much thanks to you and your endeavors. We hope to submit pictures soon of our upcoming Juneteenth Celebration at Misawa AB, Japan.

This is exactly the type of networking that we need in order to stay informed and connected. Thank you for all the wonderful information that is being shared about Juneteenth across the world. BRAVO to all the people who work behind the scenes to make this happen. All of our heads together is smarter than anyone apart. It is this type of collective thinking and opportunity that will help us all rise to the occasion. There is power in knowledge and pride in power. “If you think that education is expensive, try ignorance.” Thanks so much, keep the faith!

I love the artwork of Tom Feelings. I came to this website with the intent to learn about the Middle Passage, but ultimately learned much more about life. Thank you.

WOW!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I’d just like to thankyou for this web page. I am doing a school assignment on the ‘middle passage’ and I found your page very helpful. Also, although I am not black (and not even American for that matter) I still am against slavery in a major way, it was so terrible what happened, well, maybe one day justice will be served!

This is my first time visiting this website. I was very impressed. I was especially excited about the juneteenth.com website I didn’t know there was one. This is going to very educational for my children, because it is so hard to find the material that covers black history and up until now I been going on my memory and what was taught to me by my parents and family. Thank you and god bless you for the insight for starting this site.

I am most grateful for the web site. I have found priceless information and ideas of activities. I wish to becom a member of the NAJl. How does one apply?

This is a great site. i never knew about junteeth until today. thank you for giving me this opportunity to learn something new and interesting

i believe that it is beautiful what you guys are doing for your culture and it’s people.

Thank God for people and and in particular a website like this. I commend the creator for such a great work of design and historicity.

Very informative, well-designed and well-written. Thank you for your efforts to commemorate a critical moment in our nations history.

I have visited your site many times since I discovered it. Thank you so much for the education about our history. I am in to black history much more than I have ever been thanks to you. Also thank you for putting me in touch with TF.

I TRULY THANK AND PRAISE GOD FOR ALL OF YOU, ALL OF THE ORGINIZERS OF THIS WEB SITE ALL WHO HAVE WORKED SO HARD TO BRING FORTH THE EDUCATION TO THOSE WHO DON’T KNOW THE BEAUTY OF THERE INDEPENDANCE.I JUST SO HAPPEN TO BE A SPECIAL EVENTS CORD.IN SAN DIEGO WHERE THERE IS NO CELEBRATION BUT “THATS ABOUT TO CHANGE” KEEP ME IN YOUR PRAYERS.

I was simply thrilled to see that Juneteenth is being recognized, I am a single mother of three and had heard of this holiday long ago, I think all of our children should know about it. Thank you.

Thank you for putting this information where our children can see it. I have had a hard time teaching the subject of slavery to my students. Some of them think they come from slavery. When I tell them that we come from from greatness, they just don’t believe it! They and their parents have been brainwashed!

Bravo for any chance we get, take, acknowledge and celebrate the liberation of our ancestors. I’ve only just come to be aware of this magnificent celebration and embrace it fully and will definetly pass the word on to others who might be also in the black hole of ‘Black History Unawareness’. It is our duty to help others see the LIGHT!!!!!!!!!

i would like to express my complete joy in sharing this information with my childred. i inform them of juneteeth years ago and they thought i made it up..now they are really looking into this celebration.

I’m a member of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, before coming to Germany I was clueless about Juneteenth. But since being an active member, I help put together a Juneteeth Picnic for all the Fraternities and Sororities, in Germany. Now that I see your web site, I will definitly visit everyday! Knowledge is the key!

Thank you for one of the most complete and informative sites around. My son and I are doing research for a school project of his and we found a wealth of information on your site. We will celebrate Juneteenth this year with joy and thanksgiving but mostly with knowledge and respect for generations before us that
perservered. We’ll break out the barbeque, strawberry soda and
pray to God that all generations remember. Thank you,

This is BEAUTIFUL. I enjoyed journeying with Tom and I appreciate the invitation. Please create more sites for all to visit and be enlightned by. I would like to order the book and prints.

I love juneteenth when it comes around because it brings positive spirit to african american history

Great site – I always thought that Juneteenth was a uniquely Texas holiday, celebrated as only Texans can. I’m glad to see that it has spread. Some interesting tidbits – My dad grew up in East Texas in Winfield. His memories of Juneteenth were of delicious Barbeque-and he tried to sample every dish. However, being white, the unwritten rule was that he could not ask what was in the dish! But being a young kid, he did anyway. Some of the answers were surprising. Evne though we are white, we did have our own Juneteenth cookout avery summer. It wasn’t until much later that I realized the values he was trying to teach me. Thanks for the great site.

I am a 23 year Mississippi State University African American student majoring in history. I had thought that I knew my fair share of history until my wonderful mother-in-law mentioned to me that she was going to start her Juneteenth up again. I hd no idea what she was talking about. She explained to me the history part and I was amazed at this info that I did not know. So I told her I would immediately research the topic on the internet so here I am. I am astounded at what I’ve learned today and I want to know all that I can about this event.

The information on your site is helping our museum to be better informed about Juneteenth. We are planning a “pre-” Juneteenth (June 6) to acquaint our community about the “real” celebration that our African-American community will have on June 19.

This is a wonderful site. I discovered it by reading Essence magazine. I hope you will soon have all states involved in the historical celebration.

This is a wonderful event. However this this my very first time hearing about it. I’m empolyed at a Historic Black College and this year I will try to get everyone hear at the University involved during this week of the celebration. I ahve already spoken with the Archives here at the University about doing something educational or displaying information thoughtout the campus to let our young adults learn about our history.

May God continue to bless you all!

I love this site!!! It’s wonderful, all the information you have here is SO vital to our backgrounds that we HAVE to know more.

I have been aware of the Juneteenth for several years; however today I was browsing my Essence Magazine for the month of June and discovered this website. Needless to say, I viewed the entire website and it was quite compelling. Especially the information about the Middle Passage. It makes you feel something deep down inside. I have been wearing my “Remember the Middle Passage” sweatshirt with pride for a few years. I have had several people ask, “What is the Middle Passage?” and I don’t hesitate to explain. Anyway, it was a joy visiting this website and I have bookmarked it for future reference. It has also sparked an interest in getting some type of Juneteenth celebration going in North Carolina. Thanks!

THANK YOU VERY, VERY MUCH FOR THIS GREAT PROJECT. I’M A NATIVE TEXAN (HOUSTON) AND OLD ENOUGH TO REMEMBER WHEN IT WAS JUST A TEXAS HOLIDAY. IT’S THRILLING TO KNOW IT IS NOW CELEBRATED THE WOLRD OVER. KEEP UP THE WONDERFUL WORK. PERHAPS SOON WE WILL BE ABLE TO ADD TO THE LIST OF OFFICIAL CELEBRATIONS. GOD BLESS.

I was happy to see info. on Juneteenth in Essence. I first heard of Juneteenth in a romance novel. I look forward to seeing more about it in the coming years. I don’t know if it is celebrated in Chicago. As a people the 4th of July has nothing to do with us, yet many continue to get involved. Thanks for letting me vent.

The website is very informative. I visited the site looking for information on what kind of activities would be going on in my area. In searching for that material I ended up going from page to page and learning so much more. It was very interesting to learn the history of Juneteenth.

I am glad that there is information available on this subject. Until recently I knew nothing about this event. I am well enlightened and looking forward to finding out more about ME.

Outstanding job! Being from Texas celebrating Juneteenth all my life. It is great to have your Website as an avenue to let the world know. Of my 22 years in the Air Force I have travel all over the world and met our brothers and sister who knew nothing of Juneteenth. Some of these indivuals were even from Texas. So keep up the great work.

My ten year old cousin was asked me the history of Juneteenth. I explained it to him as I had been taught, and he contradicted me according to what he read in his textbook. His textbook labeled it “a family reunion” with no reference to slavery and Texas. As a decendent of Texan slave ancestery I was appauld but not surprised at the insufficient information provided in his textbook. I explained to him that we would search for a definition on the internet, and I was pleased to find your site, which confirmed my understanding of the day.

Continue to keep up the good work keeping the nation and our children informed.

Thanks for the information. The more we know, the more power we have. Scripture says “My people perish for lack of knowledge.”

This is a very educational and enlightening website and thank you for preparing it. I will definately put this address in my favorites and hopefully be kept abreast of the juneteenth activities around the world. Again, Thanks!

This is a wonderful, wonderful website. Great enjoyment and wonderful reading and historical knowledge. Thanks.

My husband have a gathering of 150 people in our home. This will make the fourth year, celebrating Juneteenth. This holiday is the most important day in the lives of African Americans. While many are still celebrating the 4th of July, a holiday that has nothing to do with us, because our people were still enslaved on that date 1776. People need to educate themselves about our holidays, and realize and accept that it is ok to have our own celebration of Emancipation. I am happy to see so much info on Juneteenth. I am always looking for new ideas for our celebration. This year our theme is Sankofa. Thank you!

This is a wonderful site. It is very informative. I’ll share it will my friend and co-workers. Keep up the good work. If we forget where we came from , we won’t have an idea of where we wish to go. Thanks

Beautiful Job! I am so very proud that this site is on internet. It will help to educate many of our young people as well as remind our older people that time must not be forgotten. We must rise above out of our crisis. We have done so in the past, is doing so now and will continue to do so in the future. Thank you for thinking of this.

Thanks for all the information. It will be helpful in planning our celebration.

Thank you for such an informative website. My reading group “REFRESHING MINDS” is preparing a Juneteenth event..”A Day of Remembrance and Recollection, for the first time, and it was refreshing and amazing to see that so many others are doing the same. That’s for sharing.

Thank you for the opportunity to get involved in this celebration. While I lived in Texas the festivities were exhuberant and multi-layered. To come here and find nothing was a severe letdown. Thanks to all of those who have orchestrated the plan for “juneteenth” to be the celebration that it should be nationwide.

It was a pleasure to wander upon the Juneteenth website. I had not heard the ‘holiday’ mentioned since my college days in the late 60’s. My family in Louisiana used to celebrate the day with a barbecue and homemade ice cream…yum, yum. I’m glad that it is regaining its glorious past and will pass some printed
information on to my sons. This is one of the many things we gave up to live in New Hampshire.

I truly enjoyed the info on juneteenth. and the Tom Feelings “middle passage” I have plans on purchasing the book. Thank you! Also I stumbled across this web site surfing and it should be advertised more again thank you.

I was very well informed. I strongly suggest that you continue impacking people lives with such educational information. Thus, how lease of words I can say to express my profound appreciation. Thank you very much

I’m glad this site has been put together because it is full of information that people need to be aware of, especially African Americans. I’l do whatever necessary to pass the word on this informational site. Continue to educate the global community on this matter.

I was overwelmed with excite me and the amount of information concerning the Juneteenth Celebration and all the festivities

Truly appreciate this web site. I have been researching Juneteenth for some time now and when I discovered your site I knew I found what I need!!!! Thanks for a fantastic job!

How very wonderful to have come across your very informative web site. It is very refreshing to see that the internet is allowing so much of Afro-American history to be brought forward. Had I not found the ‘Juneteenth’ site, I would never have been aware such a celebration or original incident happened. Thank you for bringing this to light.

I would like to extend my appreciation to the providers of this web site. I work in a therapeutic community and we believe in ceremony and recognition of all cultures and history. It is quick, easily accessible and informative. Peace,

This web site is wonderful; I found it to be very informational and I am going to share this page with my niece to use as a teaching tool. Thank you for this wonderful contribution…

Thank You many times over for this site. I have just returned from Dakar Senegal, and visited Goree Island. The experience was overwhelming to say the least. Since my return I can’t seem to get enough information regarding my heritage and culture. My neice and I are planning a return trip in February ’98 I am 61 yrs. old and regret not having taken the pilgrimage a long time ago. We look foward to hearing from any of our people who have the same intrests in The Motherland

I would like to thank whoever published this on the internet. I’ve truly been enlighten about Juneteenth. Now I can pass it on to a friend.

This was most informational and quite tastefully done. It was wonderful to see this information written and displayed on the internet. It makes me very proud to be an AfriCAN AmeriCAN.

In this world which we live and work, I feel this info is extremely important. We need to know our history/ancestory. Until a friend asked me to search “Juneteeth Day” I had never hear of such a thing. It’s sad to say that our people do not join together in more activities and/or are not aware of them. It’s a wonderful way to celebrate us! I believe I have browsed through all categories and will share with friends and family about it and maybe we could get “Juneteeth Day” celebrations started in our community!

I appreciate the historical reminder of the end of slavery in Texas. It never came up when I was in school.

Thank you for taking the time to put this home page together. It is my hope that more people learn about the African-American Independence Day. Like so much of our history, our children (and ourselves) seldomly get the whole truth about our heritage. Keep the faith and may God bless all your endeavors.

Glad to hear that more people are being enlightened We were used to celebrating Juneteenth in Denver CO, but I find that a lot of people are still unaware. Keep up the good work, and continue to spread the word on a wonderful Holiday!!

We would just like to thank you for a wonderful site that sheds light on an important and forgotten aspect of African American history. I took the liberty of providing a link to your site on my homepage and will spread the word as well. Thanks for the insight and knowledge. Peace…

Thanks For the uplift

This is a very educational piece of information it should be distributed out to all states, cities, and small towns

Thanks for the information. Keep up the work of bring the Net to our culture with info that effects us as a people. And indeed allowing others to taste our diversity as a people via the Net, maybe the next step will be, each human being holding hands and embracing a truely divers world.

THANK YOU FOR THE INFORMATIVE INFORMATION. OUR PEOPLE IN PHOENIX WILL BE GRATEFUL.

I am grateful for the site that you have available. I am happy to know that I, my family and friends have somewhere to go on the Internet to learn the truth about our history.

Wonderful! Growing up in California, I was taught very little about Black heritage. Now, in my adult life, I am totally fascinated with Black heritage and I am thrilled that I can “surf the web” to find out about my Black heritage. Keep on keeping on with the great work!

“Think this is a Grand site”.Please continue with Your work. For it has only begun!

You’re right the pictures alone tells the story. My wife first told me about Juneteenth when we got married, two years ago.We decided then to attend the yearly event every year. It’s held in our neighboring state of Arkansas .We live in mississippi, It was a beautiful story when she told me about the celebration, and your pictures only add to the untold stories and images inside my own head.Thank You

I am glad to see this website with positive information that is accessible to our younger generation African Americans.

I have truly learned something from reading about the beginning of Juneteenth. I was not aware that it extended back so for or what the reason why it was celebrated. Now that it is known to me, I will certainly continue to keep abreast of when it is and take part in any means that I can. As well as getting other interested in taking an active part from my community. It is a great thing that brings all mankind together. This is a great thing for African Americans of yesterday, today and most definitely tomorrow.

I thought the two poems, “Keep In Your Heart The Blood” and “We Rose” were quite powerful and moving.

I think what this information is the bomb!!! PLEASE! keep it up.
A Brother from chicago. plenty much love!

We love your site….I am a native of New Orleans. The Juneteenth Institute is currently planning the first Juneteenth Celebration to ever take place in Arlington, Texas. I will be attending the Bayou Classic in New Orleans in a few days. I would love the opportunity to meet with individuals involved in planning the New Orleans Juneteenth. Please contact me prior to next Wednesday and maybe we can plan to meet.

as an intern at a civil rights institute, i appreciate the information provided by your web page. quite thorough and extremely well put together! thank you !

Your entire net coverage of the African-American experience is quite timely. Thank You for the privilege of obtaining this information.

Great work! Keep doing what you do God be with you always

I have been spreading the news of Juneteenth throughout my area. I’m glad to have this wonderful site to share with my real and online community.

Hello, I am new to the Net. I am very excited after finding you. I am very much interested in Afro-American History. I just can’t get enough books on the subject to fill my appetite. I participated in the Juneteenth celebration last June here in Phila. You should be applauded for the level of information given on “Juneteenth. Thank you very much for making me realize that the Net is the place for me. God Bless You and May Our ancestors continue to smile on you.

I was overjoyed to learn that we have a page on the internet whereby we (as well as other races) can learn by what means we came to this country and the struggle we endured after arriving.

Excellent info tool. I’m discovering there are a number of 20-somethings in our community who know the color of our skins, but very littel else.

A superior web site!

Thank you for the time and effort you’ve expended to ensure that such an important occurrence regarding the history of America is not forgotten. A history that should be celebrated with honor and pride by all. Being a native Texan, I always thought that we–blacks in Texas–were the only one’s to celebrate Juneteenth. I cannot express the joy that I feel…just knowing that so many people are learning more about Juneteenth. Thank you again and may God Bless and Keep you always.
Warmest regards,

So much information. So much history. It goes without saying that you have really done your home work. The site is wonderful. Hope more people take the opportunity to educated themselves on our heritage. Texas

I am a columnist at for the student newspaper at the University of Iowa. I am writing a column about Juneteenth. For research, I came to this site. Thanks. One of the best sites I’ve ever come across. Peace.

Thank you for the opportunity to share our 1997 Schedule of Events. Juneteenth.com is easy to remember. Do we have permission to refer others to Juneteenth.com in our advertising and publicity spots? Schedule will follow shortly…

I was in a crunch to come up with data on Juneteenth, I had about oneteenth of a second. By the grace of our ancestors, I found your site and WoW!

Thanks for being there for me. I will let others know you are out there.

I am in awe of the information on the website regarding Juneteenth. I am a 40 yr. old African-American woman and I have never heard of Juneteenth until this very moment. I was listening to our local radio station, MAJIC 108 FM, and they were talking about the Juneteenth Celebration here in St. Louis, Missouri and the various activities that will be taking place. As I listened, I began to wonder “what are they talking about, what is Juneteenth”! The DJ, Chaze Saunders, mentioned there was loads of information on the website and that is how I connected and found this vast well of knowledge about our history. I will be ever grateful for this. However, I would like to get as much information about Juneteenth as possible. I would like to take it to my church, especially our youth ministry. Also, I would like to know how to get a Juneteenth organization started here in St. Louis, Missouri. I’ve mentioned this to several friends here (who have never heard of Juneteenth as well) and they are excited about the idea of starting such an organization, and taking the information to the churches, and youth groups in our area. I would greatly appreciate any information or help you can give us. I am very excited about this. I plan to purchase the book by Tom Feelings you have advertised on the website. The pictures were very moving and triggered a great deal of emotions and they were beautiful. I hate it has taken me 40 yrs. to find out about Juneteenth, but I am glad I did and will pass it on. Maybe next year, God willing, we will have something major here in St. Louis, Missouri. Thank you!!!!

I am from Texas, the state that originated Juneteenth and I found your website to be most informative and enlightening. I thoroughly enjoyed my visit!!

Cape Cod Celebrates Juneteenth! Theater on the Bay, in Bourne, Massachusetts proudly presents the 3rd annual observance of Juneteenth on Cape Cod with a Celebration of African-American Folk Expression Singers, Storytellers, Poets, and Speakers, featuring the
Mighty Wings of Zion Gospel Band …

Extrodinary and fantastic presentation. I printed for my son to do a report on for school. I would like to organize a Juneteenth Celebration for my brothers and sisters in the valley of Harlem.

This morning the medical director at the hospital where I worked said to me “Happy Juneteenth” I said excuse me and he repeated again “Happy Juneteenth”. I honestly did not know what he was talking about. Quite by accident as I was surfin the net I saw something that said celebration of Juneteenth Day. I immediately came to your site and have finished reading about Juneteenth Day. I am black and all my brothers and sisters were born and raised in Hawaii. My dad is still in Hawaii after 54 years. Both my parents are from Georgia. Daddy moved from Georgia when he was 24 with his buddies to come work on the shipyard at Pear Harbor. Our lives we were brought up with Hawaii history, which I still love the history. As I was reading Tom Feeling’s story I suddenly realized how fortunate I am to celebrate both cultures in my life. I will now start reading about our past to get a better of understanding of our culture. I thank you for this web site.

I was very impressed with your website! Keep up the good work. You have provided me with information on activities taking place in my home state of North Carolina. Presently, I’m stationed at Grand Forks AFB, ND I’m sad to say that only a handful of people realize the importance of this day. Thanks again for the information. How can I get some of the prints “Middle Passage”?

I was moved by “The Middle Passage.” Absolutely wonderful artwork and the simplicity of the words gave it strength and meaning. Until today I never knew what Juneteenth was or what meaning it has for all Americans.

Thanks for sharing. We in Jamaica W.I. will re-commence celebrations of our Emancipation Day, with our celebrations on August 1st. We got our on that day 1834. The Emancipation Day Secretariat would love to hear from you. If you can come to our celebrations, I would personally welcome you

I think that you have taken a bold intiative to spread a very important message. Do, by all means, continue to spread the word. Too many African-Americans do not know what Juneteenth represents. Your message is timely and much needed.

I was very happy to see this site. In this new age of technology, we have to get any and all information out to the masses. I plan on visiting this site more often. Information is power!! Thanks again.
Much Love and Peace,

Thank you for this very attractive and innovative web site. I am delighted that you have published this and hope that you will expand on this site so that our children may experience first hand the work, thoughts, and history of African-Americans world wide. There is so much to do and I am delighted to see that much of it is being done here. I am only sorry we are not in the US to help!! Sonja (Russia)

I’ve just read the poetry and it was heartwarming. Keep up the good work – a Canadian friend.

I have really enjoyed the Juneteenth Website. I think it is great to have such a wonderful page in Black History. Many people (blacks incl) have not heard of Juneteenth and its importance to our rich history. I am 44 years old and just resently heard of it myself. Thanks very much,

Thank you for creating this web page. I am of African American descentand never heard of Juneteenth. Ironic? Maybe. But sad the information wasn’t past along for that all our people would come together to rejoice, reflect, and set new goals and partnership.

I am in awe of such a wonderful web site. I never this existed until today when I was reading this week’s news on CNN interactive. This is such an incredible, moving thing for me that words are insufficient. I’m torn between reading everything on site now and running to tell all my friends about it right now. Thank you for making my day much brighter.

I was just remarking to my girlfriend that too few white Americans know anything about the significance of Juneteenth. It was a pleasure to find this site and be able to learn more about what it means to African-Americans. I liked the site very much, and found it to be a positive statement, both about how the wounds of slavery are (hopefully) beginning to heal, on both sides. I am a firm believer that education is the key to ultimately moving past that page in our collective history. Sites like this one are a powerful tool. Thanks.

I can’t believe what a wonderful site this is. I am a African American History student at UCLA and this site is so helpful for me. When I look at their pictures, I just get this feeling comes over me that I can’t describe! It is such a deep feeling. As a young African American, I can truly appreciate this site. Thank You!

I’m pleased to have come across this website. I’m still moved by Tom Feelings’ essay and paintings. Continue your valuable work for greater awareness.

Thank you “Keep in Your Heart the Blood” says it all. How badly we have robbed ourselves and our children by hiding from it and being ashamed. We are such a great people to have overcome so much. We must remember and pass on pride, self-esteem, and honor to our children and each generation to come. Happy Juneteenth – may our next emancipation be of our hearts and minds. Thank you

It is always refreshing to encounter well-needed African-American sites. In these times of blatant racism, it is a pleasure and an honor to visit a place where I am accepted as me.

I really enjoyed myself drop us a line sometime We need more sight like this one God Bless you All!

Very interesting web site, loved it! Five years ago while talking to my uncle who at the time had been working part time on a family tree I mentioned the Juneteenth holiday to him and that there was a general with the same name as me who was basically responsible for this special day. Two years later my uncle has since retired from his job with city of Seattle and has become totally entrenched in our family tree and yes you guessed it I am a distant relative of the general and proud of it. Any how I have been very busy so I am just now attempting to learn more about the General. and Juneteenth day.

Thanks for creating this website.

A great site. I was made aware of your site at the HISTORY SYMPOSIUM JUNETEENTH: ORIGINS AND SIGNIFICANCE, presented by The Texas Juneteenth Commission, December 11, 1998 in Austin, Texas.

I just want to tell you how very glad and proud I am to have “stumbled” upon your site. I was born in Waco, Texas and am proud to be part of the Juneteenth legacy. My two young daughters will be shown the way to this very informative and uplifting site. It is true that in order to move ahead-you MUST look behind.

Great Page!!! Excellent and informative!!! Exciting to look and research!!!

I really appreciate looking into our past which gives me strength for the future. We all perish because of lack of knowledge. So it’s the lack of not to slack off. I think some people get the two mixed up. Just to shed some light on the subject we must unite and learn also take care of the children and raise them right.

This is an outstanding web site! Not just technically, but in the sense that it speaks truth to power: it defines a need and fills a gap in African American history. Thank you for stepping forward.

I recently purchased “The Middle Passage” and it’s depth has entranced me ever since I brought it home and introduced it to my two daughters. I have since discovered Tom Feelings work via the internet and I can’t wait to purchase one of his works. It will be a welcomed addition to my home which will stimulate a multitude of conversations that will have my friends and family leaving with something rich and thought provoking.

Thank You for educating another black individual. I had heard only vaguely about Juneteenth but did not know the information behind it. You can better believe that I will be a part of the celebration, both in preparation and in enjoying, from now on. Thank You for your wonderfully informative site. It helps to re-enforce the fact that we should be proud of what we’ve accomplished and will yet accomplish.

Am extremely impressed with your website and information provided. Our youth organization, here in Philadelphia, Pa. is now planning the first annual major Juneteenth celebration

I have waited many years for this type of information. Thank you very much from the bottom {&top} of my heart as I continue to Learn.

This is a wonderful thing to happen and I hope this stay online so that our young people will be able to see.

This web site is educational when I grow up I will become a teacher and I will remember this site

I am really too emotional to express my feelings after cruising the Juneteenth website, particularly after seeing the Middle Passage abstracts and prose. I found out about Juneteenth about a year and a half ago while selling art. The company I worked for had a lithograph on canvas depicting African-Americans being read the decree of emancipation. It was an enlightening piece of work for me. I regret that I did not buy the piece, but I further regret that I did not even acknowledge Juneteenth again this year. The Middle Passage has moved my spirit beyond words. I will definitely by the book and next year I will indeed celebrate June 19th in 1999 and every year thereafter. My God Bless this Website and the people who make it happen. And to Tom Feelings, your work is EXCELLENT, only the spirit can move a person to depict pain in art form the way you have.

“I just loved this article–so full of truth and clarity. I really enjoy this website!!!”

“What a wonderful and enlightening web page!!”

“I would just like to say, as a result of viewing your website, I have ascertained a surplus of knowledge that was never divulged to me. If it would not have been for me researching this topic for my English 101 course @ North Carolina A&T, I probably wouldn’t have been stimulated to do this research. I am glad I took the time to find out more about my history.”

“I loved your site! I will definitely spread the word to all of my friends! “

“Praise the Lord- you are pointing us as a people both black and white in the right direction. Along with black history this day should also be praised and given it’s propers. I would like to know if there is any effort to make all people especially government aware that this time exists and that we should acknowledge it. “

“I am elated about this website and am looking forward to making it to the celebration somewhere in the world this year! Congratulations.”

“Valuable information on this site. I work in a library and was able to share your site with the students that have begun researching assignments for Black History Month.”

“We as a people can never forget our history, survival and accomplishments in our country. We can never forget the prayers of our forefathers and mothers. We are a great race by God’s grace, love and mercy. Thank you for this wonderful website.”

“I teach a class at Alabama A&M University; “Understanding the Black Experience”. I will share this information with the class. It is great!”

“I stumbled on to your site inadvertently, and I am so glad I did. I was informed, touched emotionally, and proud to see such a well done and artfully intelligent website. Thank you!”

“We would like to say that this is a wonderful site, and words cannot explain level of knowledge we have gained from your site. With the support from us and other we hope this site continues to grow”

“Thank you for helping spread the truths behind our freedom and the pride of our heritage. I have been a member of The Central Louisiana Juneteenth Association for the past 5 years. I feel such pride in spreading the word to our younger generation and in being a small part of the National Juneteenth Association. Thank you, Shirley Mitchell “
